Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1, we build on the skills and experiences the children have developed in the Early Years, while gently introducing them to the National Curriculum in a supportive and encouraging environment. A key focus is developing strong foundation skills in reading, writing and number, helping children to become confident and independent learners.
English, Maths, Phonics and handwriting are taught every day, giving children regular opportunities to practise, develop their skills and grow in confidence. Other curriculum subjects are explored throughout each half term through a balance of engaging lessons, practical experiences and hands-on activities. We use the Little Wandle scheme to support our Phonics teaching, and in June, the children will take part in the DfE Phonics Screening Check.
During the first half term, learning continues in a child-initiated environment. This familiar approach helps children to feel safe, settled and confident as they make the transition from Reception into Year 1, ensuring that they have a happy and positive start to the year.
Our carefully planned topics are designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity and inspire a sense of wonder. Through exciting learning experiences and plenty of opportunities to explore, question and discover, we aim to nurture confident, enthusiastic learners and develop a lifelong love of learning.
